Mohawk Valley Region Accessible Recreation Park

   We're in the smile business.

Park Opening:  Spring 2017

Excitement is in the air. A new and different regional recreation park has the community buzzing. The Mohawk Valley Regional Accessible Park Project will allow children and adults of all abilities the chance to laugh and play at this unique facility. Centrally located in the Village of Herkimer, behind the Arc Herkimer Business Park at 420 East German Street, the park will be the only one of its kind in a 10-county region of Central New York.

In Herkimer County and nine counties within a 30 minutes drive of Herkimer, nearly 3,000 children up to 12 years old have ambulatory disabilities that prevent them from using playground equipment that children without disabilities typically enjoy. In this 10-county region, as many as 42,317 people13 years and older—have physical disabilities that preclude or limit their use of outdoor exercise and recreational facilities because of a lack accessibility.

The project is collaboration between the Village of Herkimer and Arc Herkimer to transform contiguous properties owned by each into this remarkable facility.

Elements of the Mohawk Valley Region Accessible Recreation Park:

  • Discrete playground areas for ages 6 months to 23 months, 2 to 5 years, and 5 to 12 years
  • Exercise stations for all ages
  • Fitness path
  • Renovated basketball court and athletic field
  • Picnic pavilion
  • Bandstand
  • Adult seating at play areas

*When complete, the facility will be the only park in the region to have all these features.

Expected outcomes:

  • Convenient, accessible recreation for more than 45,000 children and adults with disabilities in a 10-county region
  • Increased opportunity for exercise and resultant health benefits for people of all ages and abilities
  • Positive economic impact in the Village of Herkimer and beyond, as the park evolves as a “destination location”
  • Inclusion, reduction of bias, mutual understanding
  • Improved physical, cognitive, social, sensory, and communications abilities for children with disabilities as a result of inclusive play
  • Increased program services for individuals with disabilities regardless of age

Reaching Our Target

Based on professional estimates, $1.5 million is required to provide a variety of accessible play, exercise, and recreational facilities in one convenient location attractive to individuals of all ages and abilities in the 10-county region.

Thus far, slightly more than $1 million has been raised. The remaining total is needed to complete the project and assure that ongoing maintenance will be funded and the park will remain a quality facility for many years to come.

In addition to supporting this remarkable park, your monthly gift will enroll you as an Arc Herkimer member and entitle you to membership benefits. See also, archerkimer.org/membership for more information.

Gifts to the park campaign of $250 or more are eligible for certain naming opportunities. Please contact Robert Baber, Arc Herkimer Development Director, email: rbaber@herkimerarc.org or via phone at 315-574-7353.
